Mind the Gaps in your Resume

When updating your resume, keep in mind that all of your dates should line up. If you have obvious (or not so obvious) gaps your resume may be overlooked. As recruiters, we are scanning resumes often and one thing we look for first is your working history. You may not think about the fact that you had a gap in the dates on your resume between January and April, but anyone reviewing your resume will question that gap and wonder why it is there. Whether you were taking a holiday, caring for a family member, studying, or taking leave for any reason, it is best to list the dates you weren’t working with a quick explanation as to why. You do not have to go into detail on your resume, for example:

January – April 2018: Holiday overseas

So long as there is a reason for the gap in dates, it is much more likely that you will be brought forward for the next stage of the hiring process.
