Setting Goals

As we enter a year, it’s usually this time that many of us re-evaluate our goals and resolutions which will play a part in our behaviour and success this year.  Goals can be set for your work and professional life as well as your personal life.  Irrespective of how ambitious your goal may be, they provide you with determination and passion to succeed.

I am a big believer that it’s important to set yourself goals.  It doesn’t matter what they are or how ‘silly’ they may appear to others, they are for you and your achievements!  Goals are the best method to measure your success!

Goals don’t need to be huge or life changing they are for you and your own accomplishments so make them as big or as small or as grand as you like.  Your goal is personal and shouldn’t be judged by anyone.  The feeling you get when you reach and achieve your goals is amazing.  One of the biggest goals I have recently set myself was to completed my second half marathon run.  This may not be a huge goal for those who are fit and genuine runners, but for someone like me that hasn’t really done any sort of physical activity since having children (seven years’ prior) this was a massive goal.  Through hard work in training and many hours of commitment I finally achieved this goal and crossed the finish line!  It wasn’t for me a matter of winning the race it was the fact that I did what I wanted to achieve and reached my goal!

Like my goal, if you set yourself a goal, ensure you put the steps in place that you will need to undertake to ensure you achieve success.  Not all goals will be accomplished straight away so make the steps and process achievable and attainable.  Once your long term goal has be established put some short-term goals in place to achieve success.

Did you know the most common goals set by people are….

Lose weight

  • Get fit
  • Reduce stress
  • Quit smoking
  • Quit drinking
  • Be healthier

(I think I have had all these goals – except smoking for myself at various times)

Goals like mentioned should also be present in the workplace.  The same principles apply in that you should set a long-term goal and establish short term goals to achieve ultimate success.  Most employers will set goals for their team and employees which could be in the form of budget and sales targets, individual performance targets and general goals to motivate and inspire individuals.

A workplace without goals fosters complacency and non-achievers and the same too in life.
